Where are your keys? Wait! Where is your CAR?
In the last week I’ve heard of 3 cars being stolen. All of which were done by someone entering the home and stealing the car keys or handbag. This is quite a common theft these days but particularly during the dark evenings as the intruder can get about undetected.
To make matters worse, it can cost a small fortune to have your car locks, house locks and all other locks changed at the same time but it’s necessary once a bunch of keys have been stolen. And with no sign of forced entry your insurance company won’t be too happy to pay out.
The first bit of advice is to lock all doors and windows even when you’re at home. Keep keys in drawers or cupboards away from the doors. And be observant; these people are watching you come and go from the home and take note of things such as putting keys in your coat, bag or pockets.
Thee are preventative measures you can take such as:
1. Install security lights to detect people approaching your property
2. Have your alarm system chime when the doors open (we can modify all existing alarms to do this)
3. Lock the doors at all times, you can have Sash Jammers installed so that keys aren’t needed
4. Make your security system obvious. Whether it’s alarms. CCTV, locks or lights, make them obvious
5. Have a professional security company give you advice and free quotations on how to make your security measures work to protect you, but also be easy to use and comply with your insurance policy.

So you have a dark garden or driveway, or maybe just a dark area at your front door. Or perhaps your lights work fine but they don’t get the right area or annoy the neighbours?
When you install security lighting you need to think about what you want to acheive.
A good spotlight should be placed high up and look straight down at your doorway. This will stop burglars tampering with locks for any length of time as they obviously don’t want to do it in the spotlight. It also makes it easier for you to find your key and the lock when arriving home. You may also have a light at the garden gate or driveway entrance to help announce visitors arriving. You could even have a chime sound inside the house that rings when the light is activated, these also chime during the day even when the light is set not to come on. No reason to miss the post arriving or a parcel delivery. The light itself should not be easily reached, even with a stick. Thieves will try and move it so it doesn’t detect them when they return. They may even try and smash the bulb. A ‘cage’ can be supplied if the light must be fitted lower down.
A dusk to dawn light is a must in our opinion. It comes on when it gets dark, goes off when it gets light and runs on a set fraction of the bulbs capacity, say 50%. If it detects movement it then lights to 100% of the capacity, so you have a low ambient glow anround the area all through the dark hours and instant light when needed. No reason to trip on the door mat, and plenty snails will thanks you for it! They cost pennies in running costs and add security as well as safety. Again a ‘cage’ may be fitted around it to stop it being damaged. Although there are also some very nice ornamental designs around too!
A good torch should always be handy at the bed side. You never know when you might wake up during a powercut, or if you hear a noise you want to investigate without waking up the whole house with bright lights.
Night lights for cildren can help tem feel better about being leftalone in the dark. You also may find them usefull when you go to check on the kids and avoid standing on small or noisey toys.
Whichever lights you are going to use. Always remember that cables should not be visible outside unless suitably protected. The right kind of cable should be used in the right areas too. Plastic coated cabling is broken down by UV light outside so coatings, conduit and other protection is important. A little silicone over screw heads and fixings will keep the rust away and make changing bulbs easier; just peel the old silicone off, do the maintenance on the light, and reapply silicone for the next time. There is an example of this on our face book page in the photo albums found at: www.facebook.com/groundlock
There should also be a switch you can use to turn the light on and off. This allows different functions on the light, for constant and timed use. It also means you can activate the light from inside the house should you want to check outside. A proffesional installer knows exactly where to position the lights so to achieve the best detection and lighted area.

How much would you pay for ALL of your possessions? Does your insurance policy even cover that?
I can save you money. I can save you heartache. Burglary can be devastating, even if you move home victims claim to never feel as safe again for years. Burglary victims often suffer from violence or fear of violence (even after the event) loss of possessions (some irreplaceable or sentimental items) feelings of paranoia and intusion, fear for childrens safety and sadly, properties are often targeted a second or third time.
So again, how much would you pay?
An alarm system that monitors your property for floods, fire, intruders, has a panic alarm, and calls your mobile to let you know when these things are happening.. it can even just let you know that the kids have gotten home safely. You can ‘call’ your system for an update, and even listen in to your home. Your system can call Ground Lock when you’re away from home, perhaps on holiday if it is triggered.
How much does this cost?

CCTV that can be viewed from an internet terminal or even from your iPhone, Blackberry or Android Mobile. Check on staff at your work premises, children and carers at home. Check on the pets, and of course capture any of those instances where crime comes to your door.
Here are two scenarios:
You’re away on holiday when your alarm detects a flood. It has been set to call Ground Lock in any instance of alert. Ground Lock take the call, then call a plumber whom they arrange to meet at your address. Using Locksmith techniques or our Spare Key Storage facility we can let the plumber in, stop the flood. Make repairs. Minimise Damage. Alert relevant family/neighbour. Secure the property. Take any designated, agreed action you choose.
Alarm install average from: £580. Emergency Attendance Call out from £80
You’re away from home when your alarm calls to say there is a disturbance in your home. It tells you what kind of disturbance, in this case it’s an intruder alert. You can then hang up your mobile and look at your home cctv footage via your mobile and ‘capture’ an image of the intruder! Call the police and give them a description of the intruder, what they are doing, what they are stealing. You can then email that image to a neighbour or relative to hand to the police.
Alarm install average from: £550. CCTV install average with mobile viewing from £690
Still think its a hard sell? You might also SAVE on your insurance policy too..

Now this kind of post often brings about the idea that kidnap, abduction, abuse and so on, are BIG crimes that happen occasionally to OTHER people.
As a parent of a 2 year old I know I certainly have thought about their safety. In fact, all new parents at some point consider what would happen in such events, and some take measures of prevention. All thought and care in this regard is good, but they still wonder if they have covered all bases. Sadly things do get over looked or aren’t even considered. A lot of this also comes down to trust. At some point your child is left in the care of others, and perhaps that carer is better prepared, perhaps not.
As a professional security advisor there are a host of devices to help look out for your children. The bonus to this is that the devices also look after the adults and pets too! A child minder, nanny, grandparent may not like the idea of cctv watching their every move, but if you point out that the cctv footage would also record their honesty and protect them from allegations they may very well rethink the idea.
CCTV can run pratically unoticed in and around your home. Todays technology allows you to watch live footage from you CCTV system at any remote point with internet access – anywhere around the world. No computer with you? No problem, you can even view it from your iPhone, Blackberry and some other mobile phone handsets.
Or how about an alarm that texts you when the children or carers come and go from your property? Lights that come on with motion detection? Sound aactivated monitors from one room to another?
Those are the bigger systems. You could also benefit from a range of locks, latches and bolts that are auotmatic, remote control, master keyed or the basic door bolt.
Having a professional assess your propety and cercumstances and discussing your budget will get you the best system for the right price.
